Oratories by the Sea

These small structures scattered along the cliff's edge aren't ruins of larger buildings—they're exactly as the Maya intended them. Some measure barely a meter across, with doorways so small that worshippers had to kneel or crouch to enter. You've discovered the Oratories by the Sea, personal prayer shrines where ancient worshippers came to speak directly with their gods.

While the grand temples behind you hosted elaborate public ceremonies led by powerful priests, these tiny structures served a very different purpose. Dating to the Late Postclassic period, they were spaces for private devotion—places where ordinary people could make personal offerings and whisper their prayers to the divine.

That physical act of lowering yourself to enter? It wasn't poor planning—it was intentional, an expression of humility before the gods. The simple cubic forms feature flat roofs in the classic East Coast style, and if you look carefully, you might still spot traces of red, blue, and yellow paint clinging to the stucco surfaces.
